The Aussie Buoy focused on designing an easy-to-use Buoyant device to be placed in selected Australian beaches, coastlines, inland rivers, and dams for Surf Life Saving Australia. The Aussie Buoys act as a reminder to take care if there are no lifeguards on duty, and that in the event of someone getting into difficulty in the water, they can be used as an emergency flotation device for rescuing or until help arrives.

The design draws inspiration from familiar buoyant products commonly used in Australia, such as kickboards and bodyboards, ensuring comfort, recognition, and ease of use. The board gives the person in danger enough chest and stomach support to lift them up out of the water, reducing arm strength and grip commonly used with other buoyant devices such as a rescue buoys, rescue tubes or, torpedo buoys.
